What is Teeth Scaling and Cleaning?
Teeth scaling and cleaning or deep cleaning is a non-surgical process that involves scaling all tartar deposits, plaque (soft, sticky bacteria infested film) and bacterial toxins from the surface of the teeth and the area between the gums and teeth. This procedure is used to treat periodontal and gum disease.
What is Gum Disease?
Gum Disease happens due to inflammation of the gum tissue and can affect the supporting bone and teeth in your mouth. Acids, particular food and plaque bacteria, all contribute to the development of Gum Disease.
What are the symptoms of Gum Disease?
The first step is to identify the symptoms of gum disease so that you can seek timely medical intervention. Symptoms to look out for are bad breath and bleeding gums.
How does Teeth Scaling and Cleaning help treat Gum Disease?
At Apollo Clinic’s Dentistry Centre, our experienced dentists start with a thorough examination of your mouth. Following this, an ultrasonic scaling device with sonic vibrations is used to remove larger pieces of plaque, biofilm and tartar from the tooth surface and below the gum line. A manual instrument is then used for removing any residual smaller deposits and smoothening the tooth surface. Next, detailed scaling of the root surface is done to reduce the inflammation of the gum tissue. Your dentist will scale the root surface thoroughly to rough out target areas, eliminating biofilm and plaque development from re-adhering underneath the gum line, allowing your gums to heal and reattach themselves more firmly. The dentist may then apply fluoride to strengthen the teeth.
If the gum tissue is diseased or sensitive, local anaesthesia may be administered to numb the tissue. If you feel sensitivity before or after the dental deep cleaning procedure, your doctor may recommend a paste that provides sensitivity relief.
Depending on the level of oral disease in the mouth, 2-4 sessions for deep cleaning of teeth may be required. In case of advanced periodontal conditions, dental scaling and cleaning will be done before periodontal surgery is conducted to stop the progression of bone loss. You may also have to go back for maintenance visits to confirm that your teeth and gums are healthy.
