Most of you must have had the desire to have flawless and glowing skin. And in that process, many of you would have tried a lot of beauty products as well as a variety of beauty treatments. But the worst part is, all those cosmetics might sometimes be harmful for your skin, and beauty treatments may not always work for you. Thankfully, skin specialists or dermatologists can always help you out when you suffer from any kind of skin issues and may suggest you medications or other solutions to keep your skin healthy and glowing.
While many people might consider dermatologists as a solution to acne only, treating acne is just a small part of the wide range of skillful skin treatments that these experts can actually perform, such as curing severe skin diseases including rashes, skin allergies, problems of itching, bumps, etc. They are not just confined to skin treatments, but also help with problems of the scalp, nails and hair as well.
When to visit a dermatologist
Following are the conditions during which you must visit a skin specialist or a dermatologist:
- Chronic skin conditions:
You might have experienced conditions of red, itchy or flaky skin that could not be treated by normal lotions or ointments. You might have blamed your skin for such conditions, for being too oily, dry or sensitive to cosmetic products. But, in reality, you might be experiencing a chronic skin disease known as psoriasis or eczema. Such conditions can be effectively treated by the supervision of a dermatologist. Make an appointment with your doctor, if similar skin conditions are bothering you that are not going away on their own.
- Skin Cancer Screening:
One of the most common types of cancer is skin cancer. Like any other kind of cancer, early diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer is equally important. It is suggested that you visit a dermatologist once in a year for skin cancer screening, not just in order to detect it, but also to prevent it.
What to ask your doctor in your visit:
While you visit your doctor, you must make sure that you keep track of certain factors during your treatments or check-ups, which you should ask your doctor. These include:
- If going out under the sun would be fine with the given prescriptions: Some treatments may make you more sensitive to sunlight, and therefore you may be required to avoid going out under the sun. Make sure that you enquire about this from your doctor.
- Should you exfoliate: Exfoliation is an important part of keeping your skin fresh and healthy. There are a wide range of exfoliations that may be effective depending on the type of your skin. While you visit your doctor, ask him whether you should use any exfoliant, and if you do, which type should be the most suitable for you.
- Which are the foods that you should avoid: You may be consuming foods that are actually harming your skin. Ask your doctor, if there’s any food that you may need to stay away from.
- If you can get a facial: Under certain skin treatments, you may be asked to avoid getting any kind of facial. Ask your doctor if getting a facial is fine with your current skin conditions.
If you are suffering from any other issues related to your skin, do not simply rely on your beauty products. If you find such issues not going away on their own, you must immediately consult a dermatologist before it worsens your skin conditions any further.
