Understanding A Deviated Septum:
In the human body, the nasal septum is the bone and cartilage which divides the nasal cavity of your nose in half. A deviated septum, instead of being properly shaped, is significantly off-centred, or crooked, which can make it difficult for the patient to breathe.
Most people have some kind of imbalance in the way their nose is structured, which do not result in significant discomfort or problem. However, there are many cases in which the imbalance faced is severe, resulting in significant breathing problems, and requiring treatment. Let’s look at this condition in a little more detail:
The Cause of A Deviated Septum:
Most cases of a deviated septum are either genetic, i.e. in people who are born with this condition, or developed due to external factors, like an injury or trauma to the nose.
Common Symptoms Of A Deviated Septum:
One of the most common symptoms of a deviated nasal septum is frequent nasal congestion, where the patient can notice that one side of the nose frequently becomes more congested than the other. In addition, another symptom of this condition is difficulty breathing. Persistent or constantly repeating sinus infections can also be a sign of a deviated septum.
Other signs include:
A deviated septum can also be the cause of sleep apnea, a serious medical condition that results in a patient not breathing for a short period of time during sleep.
Treatment For Deviated Nasal Septum:
In many cases, the symptoms for a deviated nasal septum can be relieved by prescribed medication. In cases where medication cannot help, your doctor may suggest going in for a surgical procedure, called a septoplasty, which will essentially help to repair a crooked septum, and improve your breathing.
Septoplasty: During this procedure, the surgeon will work through the inside of the nose, essentially making a small incision in the septum, and removing the excess bone or cartilage to even out the breathing space of the nostril. In some cases, the patient may also elect to combine a rhinoplasty, or a nose job, with a septoplasty, to help improve the appearance of the nose. This surgery is usually performed under local or general anaesthesia, and takes about one & a half hours.
