Conditions - Nutrition & Dietetics - Diet for Diabetics
Whether you are trying to manage your diabetes or minimise the risk, diet plays an important role in determining the amount of sugar you consume. Many people are unaware of what food products are converted to sugar or glucose. Our expert dieticians at Apollo Clinic will prescribe a balanced diet plan with the right amount of foods that meet your body’s nutritional needs.
How can we help you?
t Apollo Clinic, our team of qualified and registered nutritionists will tailor a diabetic diet based on various factors such as current health, family history and lifestyle. While the diabetic diet requirements vary for each person, here are some thumb rules:
Starchy foods - Have 5-14 portions of starchy foods. A portion would be 1 slice of bread, 2-3 tbsp of rice, noodles or pasta, half a small chapati, 2-4 tbsp of cereal. Prefer high fibre foods rather than low-fibre ones.
Fruit and vegetables - Have at least 5 portions of veggies and fruits. A portion would be 1 piece of fruits such as an apple or a banana, a handful of grapes, a tbsp of dry fruit, 3 heaped tbsp of vegetables, a small glass of fruit juice or smoothie. Prefer whole fruit over juices.
Proteins – Have 2-3 portions of proteins. A portion would be 2 eggs, 3 tbsp of lentils, beans or dal, 60-85g of meat, 120-140g of fish, 2 tbsp nuts.
Milk and dairy products – Have 3 portions of milk and dairy products. A portion would be 140 ml of milk or a small pot of yoghurt. Opt for low-fat varieties.
Sugars and fats – Have 0-4 portions of fats and sugars. A portion would be 2 tsp of spread, butter, salad dressing, oil, jam, honey or sugar. Lesser the intake of these foods, the better.
Have 5-6 small meals rather than having 3 large meals. A smaller meal will prevent a sudden rise in blood glucose levels, thus giving your body time to process carbohydrates present in your food. Frequent meals will help in avoiding low blood sugar.
