What are Eyesight Problems?
Different types of eyesight problems can affect a child’s vision. Some common focus and alignment issues, refractive and eye conditions include lazy eye, nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism (distorted vision).
What are the Symptoms of Eyesight Problems?
Symptoms of common eyesight problems include:
What are the Causes of Eyesight Problems?
When the shape of the eye blocks light from focusing directly on the retina, refractive errors occur. These errors can be caused due to the length of the eyeball, ageing of the lens or shape of the cornea.
Lazy eye occurs when one eye can focus much better than the other. When the brain receives a blurry and a clear image, it starts to ignore the blurry one. Vision in that eye tends to worsen and cause lazy eye.
How are Eyesight Problems diagnosed?
In diagnosing an eye problem, your doctor will conduct a comprehensive eye dilation exam. This exam helps to see the back of your eye which is the retina and detect eye diseases. You may also be asked to read some eye test charts.
To diagnose a lazy eye, different examinations are conducted such as matching pictures or letters, looking into a light, reading a letter chart and looking at visual targets at different distances.
How are Eyesight Problems Treated ?
Refractive errors are treated using eye glasses, contact lenses or even surgery.
In treating a lazy eye, a patch will be given to cover the strong eye. This forces your child’s brain to start using the lazy eye. Eventually, the vision in the lazy eye gets restored to normal.
