What are Skin Problems?

Skin problems are common in children. There can be different kinds of skin conditions and may significantly vary in severity and symptoms. Skin disorders may be permanent or temporary, painless or painful, mild or even life-threatening.

Some common skin problems in children include eczema, diaper rash, chicken pox, measles, warts, acne, fifth disease, hives, ringworm, rashes from infections heat rash and rashes from allergic reactions. 

What are the Symptoms of Skin Problems?

Skin problems have a broad range of symptoms.  Here are some skin irregularities that are typically symptoms of a skin problem: 

  • Painful or itchy rash, rash on legs, rash on arms, rash on neck, rash on face
  • Raised bumps on skin that are white or red 
  • Red spots on skin
  • Peeling, scaly, rough, cracked or dry skin
  • Discoloured patches of skin
  • Open sores or lesions
  • Ulcers, warts, fleshy bumps on skin
  • Changes in mole colour or size
  • Loss of skin pigment

What are the Causes of Skin Problems?

Various lifestyle factors and health conditions can cause skin infections. Certain skin conditions have no known cause. However, some common known causes of skin problems include:

  • Parasites, microorganisms or fungi living on the skin
  • Bacteria trapped in hair follicles and skin pores
  • Viruses
  • Over exposure to the sun 
  • Hereditary factors
  • Weak immunity system
  • Coming into c ontact with irritants, allergens or another person’s infected skin
  • Certain illnesses that affect the immune system, kidneys, thyroid, and other body systems
  • Certain medications

How are Skin Problems diagnosed? 

To diagnose a skin problem, your doctor will conduct a physical examination of the child and check their medical history. For certain conditions, a sample of skin scraping, blood or urine may be sent to a diagnostic laboratory to identify the cause. In case of skin patches, ultraviolet light may be used to see them clearly. 

How are Skin Problems Treated ? 

Most skin diseases are curable. Different treatment methods may be used in the treatment of  skin problems including antihistamines, medicated lotions, topical creams, vitamin or steroid injections, antibiotics, laser therapy and condition-specific drugs.
