Cystitis
What is Cystitis?
Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder that is usually caused by a bladder infection. It is the most common type of urinary tract infection (UTI) and occurs when the bacteria enter the urethra or bladder and begin to multiply. Besides, this condition can also occur when the bacteria in the body become imbalanced, leading to an infection and cause inflammation. Cystitis can affect both, men and women. However, women are much more vulnerable to this condition than men.

The signs and symptoms of cystitis often include:

What are the Causes of Cystitis?
Most cases of cystitis occur when the bacteria that live in the bowel get into the bladder through the urethra. While it is not clear how this condition occurs, it can be caused by:
- Having sex
- Using a diaphragm for birth control
- Wiping the bottom after going to the toilet, especially if you wipe from the back to the front
- Inserting a urinary catheter or tampon.
Who is at risk of Cystitis?
Cystitis is much more common in women than men due to a shorter urethra. However, this condition can affect both the genders.
Women may be at risk for cystitis if they:
- Use diaphragms with spermicide
- Are sexually active
- Are experiencing menopause
- Are pregnant
- Are utilizing personal hygiene products that can cause irritation.
Men may be at risk for cystitis if they have enlarged prostate glands due to the retention of urine in the bladder.
Common risk factors for both, males and females include:

- Radiotherapy to the pelvis
- Chemotherapy medicines used for treatment
- Use of catheter
- Diabetes
- Kidney stones

- Changes in the immune system

In most cases of cystitis, the condition resolves itself within a few days. If the condition lasts longer than four days, it is essential that you visit your doctor. Sometimes, a short three-day course of antibiotics may be prescribed.
