What is Jaundice?
Jaundice is a yellow tinge of the skin and the whites of the eyes. Jaundice in newborns is fairly common and settles down within two weeks of the baby’s birth. In older babies and children, jaundice is not considered normal and can indicate an underlying infection or illness.
What are the Symptoms of Jaundice?
Some jaundice symptoms to look out for are:
What Causes Jaundice?
Jaundice is caused whe n a substance called bilirubin builds up in the blood and tissues of the body. During the normal breakdown of red blood cells in the body, bilirubin is produced. When the liver functions properly, this bilirubin is processed and released into the digestive system. However, when the liver is unable to function properly, this bilirubin builds up in the blood.
Viral hepatitis, spread through contaminated water, is the leading cause of jaundice in India. Infections such as typhoid and malaria can also cause jaundice.
How is Jaundice diagnosed?
To diagnose jaundice, your doctor will take your child’s medical history and conduct a physical exam. A diagnostic blood test may also be performed to check for hepatitis virus antibodies, bilirubin levels, abnormal red blood cells and other substances that indicate liver function. Other diagnostic tests such as an ultrasound or biopsy may also be recommended to determine the cause of jaundice.
How is Jaundice Treated ?
Depending on the underlying cause of jaundice, treatment will be provided. If it is caused by viral hepatitis, it will recover on its own. If the cause is other infections, treating them will result in recovery from jaundice. Do ensure that your child gets plenty of rest and fluids during the recovery period.
